Figure Study in Color
A shoot with Pennsylvania model Heather Marie gave me the perfect opportunity to shoot in color. While most of my work is done in monochrome, in this case the vivid colors of the model's hair, skin, and tattoos made color a good choice.
We were shooting in natural light with the late afternoon sun filtered through the windows, placing the brightest area of the image on the vivid magenta hair.
Fashion icon Coco Chanel once noted that: "The most courageous act is to think for yourself. Aloud." In this, Coco would certainly approve of Heather Marie, who radiates elegance even nude and unadorned. In person, she is plain speaking, no nonsense, and charmingly direct. Her choice of hair color and many tattoos in many cases might signal a person who craves attention, but for her it is simply who she is, and I couldn't imagine her any other way. Heather is admiringly used to speaking to the world on her own terms.
Much of my work is about creating images of strong women and their natural beauty. Women who have something to say to the world. Heather Marie is proudly one of those; living her life on her own terms.
